There hasnt been a thread so im starting one.
Didnt really play morrowind at all so I basically know nothing about the game. But I decided to play it for a bit 2day to see what it was like and its not bad, even though it can lag a bit on medium settings when theres a few ppl fighting at once.
Anywho, since the game was designed for xbox the menu system is really chunky and highly annoying. They dont even tell you what the tabs or columns mean?
Quick question, when you are choosing your weapon and such what do the columns mean? Is this about right?
Coin - How much its worth / sells for Feather - How much it weighs / Takes up in your inventory (Does this have a factor on how fast you can swing the weapon?) (3rd column) - How much damage / Armor the item has? (4th column) - The item durability
Also how does all the flawed, perfect etc gems and so forth work, is that like in diablo that can be used to enhance items? I think thats enough for the moment.

Ok, im just learning myself, but I think you are right about all of them, and yes apparantly you swing heavier weapons slower than lighter ones, but they will probably deal more damage per hit.
And the gems arent for upgrading like in diablo. I think they are just alchemical ingredients (they were in Morrowind), or maybe just precious things you can sell for money.

ok so is it any good? does it run well on your setups.. my pc is pretty close to you guys.. i've just heard its really graphics intensive and you kinda need a really good video card to get anything half decent out of it? when you say medium settings wat were you set at? res etc

With my P4 2.4 and6600gt, i run at mostly medium graphics on 1024x768 , and its a little choppy, especially when theres a lot of stuff goin on, ir doesnt go too bad. Better than shay with his Radeon 9550 anyway

Truly my set up is the worst. Doesnt matter. In a couple of weeks our PCs will own everyone's Brenton. Of course, if you didnt decide to blatantly copy me I would have the superior PC. But kids being kids, you couldn't not copy your hero.
Anyway, Oblivion is good. Although it's going to take AGES. I've been playing for about 5-6 hours now and gotten almost nowhere. Alan, if you join the thieves guild I might be able to give you some tips without resorting to Brenton's book of cheats.
Also, in Bulma there's a decent quest for getting used to the disposition system (getting people to like you) that ends in you having a +5 speed amulet (constant effect).

Its pretty good, i've prolly already played it for about 30-40 hours at least =D
its minimum was a 2ghz with a 128mb vid card and its reccomended was supposedly a 3ghz with 2gb or ram and a 6800 or better.
Its very sad that they've made it a bit orientated to the xbox... prolly thank microsoft for that whom prolly paid many$$ to be the launching game for the 360... the bastards
But once you get used to the menu system its alright, and sorta fits well.
I'm pretty much loving it so far, as a fan of the series.
Do not let yourself contract vampirism.. it blows, the quest to get rid of it takes ages, you literally burn in sunlight.. ("why am i smoking... AAARG IT BURNS") and the times you can be outside all the shops are shut. Stupidly too, feeding on people _supresses_ your vampire abilities... wouldnt you think it enhances them? But feeding keeps you looking healthy.. sorta.. so people dont just scream and take off when you try and talk to them, and the sun doesnt burn quite so much. But overall its annoying... well i think so anyway.

Did u forget that u upgraded and ur comp is far superior? You should be able to play it on a good res at high graphics. Im on 800x600 medium and my comp is pretty much the same as brentons. Maybe I should change it to 1024x768 so the menu system is a bit smaller. Im in the sewers at the moment right after getting that key (or whatever) of the king. Ive only played it for an hour or so. I dont know why ppl complain about the fighting system, I think its awesome. Get charged at by a giant rat so u draw ur sheild and it crashes into it with a loud thud and it pushes the sheild back, lol Also is there a certain way to fight ppl with armor? Cause when I was protecting the king this guy came out and he had like full heavy body armor and my hits werent doing any damage. Do u have to aim for the head or something?

yer but realistically my video card is the same as yours alan. Arach would probably be the one i need to talk to considering we have nearly identical setups. I need to buy this game though. it sounds really good.

I don't know about those assassins in the sewers Alan. I did nothing but avoid them and constantly run away. Anyway, I didn't think much of the start where you are up to Alan. I wanted to go roaming through cities and see what the game was like in full, and that took like 20 minutes of roaming around fighting rats. But still, the fireballs are awesome against rats and useless for the rest of the game so enjoy those while you can. As for armour, I've no idea. In Morrowind it made no difference, and I assume it's the same. I guess with all the improvements of this game it would make sense if you hit individual parts and could target the head or limbs or even individual sections of armour to weaken it. However I don't know if that's actually the case. Damn it, now I want to go home and play some more. I'm only Level 2, and even that took me at least 4 hours of playing to get to.

The fireball spell works alright on the troll guys, like 3 hits to kills them. When you level up does ur spell and weapon damage increase?

When you level up you can choose to put points into strength, which improves your weapon damage (although I think it's... agility that improves bow damage) but as for spells I'm fairly certain you have to learn a better spell in order for it to increase. You do that at Mage Guilds and the likes. Don't know if you can create your own custom spells like you could in Morrowind, but I can't see why they would have taken that out in Oblivion.
Although having said that, they do appear to have taken out Levitation... which is annoying.
Back to levelling up - when it happens you get to upgrade 3 of your attributes (Strength, Agilty, Speed, Personality etc) and depending on how much you've used each one, you will be able to level them up a different amount of points. For example, it could look like this:
3 x Strength 2 x Agility 3 x Speed Personality Intellegence Willpower Luck
This would be because you've been using your sword or whatever and therefore it offers you the ability to level up more in strength, you've been attacking people more or whatever it takes to level up Agility, and you've been running places and such (levelling up Athletics perhaps) and so you can level up Speed more. However you obviously haven't been using much in the way of spells, or tried to get people to like you much because your Intelligence and Personality can only go up by 1. You can still level up Intelligence and Personality, but in MOST cases you'd be foolish not to just go for the 3 highest numbers (in this case Strength, Agility and Speed obviously).
Anyway, you might find that handy since you've never played Elder Scrolls games before.

So does that have a barring on what class you choose? I think for my guy I chose Warrior.
Im trying to understand this, the attribute points are different from the skills you have? Like you upgrade acrobatics by running and jumping everywhere but if u want to upgrade the attribute then u have to level up by increase ur primary skills?
So then what does putting points into the attributes do? Like putting 3xSpeed increase you acrobatics further from what I had already been doing?

Im trying to understand this, the attribute points are different from the skills you have? Like you upgrade acrobatics by running and jumping everywhere but if u want to upgrade the attribute then u have to level up by increase ur primary skills? That's exactly right. And upgrading your attributes gives additional bonuses. For example, upgrading strength lets you carry more and be less affected by weight etc. Also, I dont THINK (not sure in oblivion) that you can upgrade your skill's level above the governing attribute level... or it might be the other way around. (eg, governing attribute for marksmanship = agility) When you level up, you can see what the advantages of putting points into different stuff will do. Theres obvious ones like Endurance that give you more health and fatigue and stuff like that. And there's no skills for that. In answer to your question, putting 3x into Speed will make you run faster (I know that for sure since I got +5 to speed in an amulet) but your athletics won't go up 3 levels or anything. It's just another increase on top of the skill level.

There is spell creation and item creation, you have to be in the mages guild and have done all the 'recommendation' quests.
Spells dont get stronger when you level, or when you have higher intelligence. But the higher skill you have for the spell (eg. destruction) makes the spell cost less mana. Having higher intelligence gives a bigger mana reserve.
Level is mainly only an approximation of how strong your character is. Except that when you level up you get 1/10 of your Endurance as more hit points.
Headshots do seem to count with a bow. When i hit people in the head it sometimes even knocks them down or staggers them. I cant tell with a melee weapon tho, i'd have to expirement.
And classes dont ultimately restrict anything. All the classe do is set your major skills, which consequently level up faster. Therefore even if you chose a fighter class, you could become a mage, it would jsut take longer to level up the skills.
Remember to keep your items repaired. Also dont jump around in combat much. If you have low fatigue you do shit all damage.
Alchemy is the best, and unlike morrowind, if you make a potion that has bad effects, you get the option to poison your weapon with it! its only single shot, but its a great idea.
I'm lvl 15 now... been playing it pretty much non-stop since i got it... not much else to do. i did originally get up to lvl 11, and then had to restart. I contracted vampirism, and there were a few other things i wasnt happy about with my character. So i restarted.

that sounds pretty cool.
But is there ever a time in the game u can actually use the bow effectively? Like when I was fighting goblins as soon as I shoot one with the bow the run at me full pace and start attacking before I can reload.
I was also talking about this to Brenton and he wasnt really sure. Is there a way to view the damage that you are doing or is the damage number listed for the weapon the only indication? Like if you increased the Blade skill (getting a bit a head of myself) so it would make your blade handling skills better, how would you know if thats improving your damage?

The skills for blade, blunt, marksman make you do more damage as they increase. The damage listed for the weapon is its base damage, and then your modifiers are added, such as strengthand your skill in that weapon.
And the semi-circle above your crosshair is their health... thats the best estimate you have.
And you can use the bow for you main combat, it just means you better run faster than them.. and you'll be doing a lot of it... backwards.. hehe. When you reach journeyman in Marksman (50 i think) you can zoom in as well when you have an arrow notched.
As i got higher in Acrobatics i can do these little dive-rolls.. its fun. Great for dodging around in combat, though it took a bit to get used to them. Have to hold block and a direction and press jump. You can only do them when your acrobatics reaches a certain level tho (50 i think it was).

I've ordered the game but its on back order through dick smith. Ill just have to wait haha You punces should buy the game and support the developer. Except brenton who did buy it

I am going to buy it. I just dont have any money left over after upgrading my PC. I do agree that if a game is really good, you should support the developers... and hence I do have every intention of buying it.
Edit: Also, Brenton corrupted his Oblivion files. He's obsessed with restarting characters over and over again and I dont know why. This must be the reason the files are "corrupted." Perhaps he needs an excuse to constantly be worse than everyone else. Sure, he was actually a higher level in the game, and further ahead, but maybe he knew we were catching and needed to think ahead and plan an excuse.
