so i suspect something is fried, either my vid card, cpu or mobo....but could it also be a virus?

Yeah my guess would be Vid card first could be causing all that weird shit, but yeah im not sure. If you had another video card handy, you could try replacing it, but if its the mobo thats fucked then you risk frying the other video card too...

yer just open it up and give it a good clean out.. blow out any dust and so forth.. be careful if you use a vacuum cleaner. take out video card and give it a blow out too. see how that goes.. looks like heat to me mate

That kind of corruption is definately the sort you see when the vid card is dying or overheating... but... Wait a sec.... if it was vid card dying why would it show up in a screenshot? I'd have figured the artifacts would be 'ontop' of everything, ie, after the picture is 'made' as its sent to the monitor, not what software things like windows could actually see ... which makes me think its a software thing.. *is confused and doesnt know enough about the graphical drawing process to have a direct opinion*

Yeah I thought that too.
But brentons video card has been having graphical glitches as well, mainly in games, but they are still drawn on the screen if you like.

YEah, nowhere near that bad, mine are just like the video card doesnt know when to stop drawing the textures sometimes so i get textures that stretch across teh screen. And they show up in screenshots as well as video capture programs like fraps.

Yeah, those kind of artifacts show up in screenies because they are a software thing, generally a problem or incompatibility with your drivers or directX as its having problems arranging the graphics.
Acids prob looks like a whole other ball game tho >_> Try your vid card in a diff computer to see if it is the problem. Try different drivers. Get an extra fan to blow on it or something.

oh god you shoulda seen the film of dust that had covered the fan cover thingy.....it was disgusting...but i tried the graphics card on another computer and after about 10 minutes the same thing happened.....
i put a good old pci 32mb graphics thing in mine and everything ran fine except for the fact i couldnt play games...so it looks like my graphics card is fucked....and i dont know how to figure out what happened to it!
if terry cbf he has a picture of the film of dust....it was like a mini plate....i pulled it off solid like sheet of felt....
any suggestions on how to maybe diagnose what happened to the vid card other than it fucked itself would be good....in any case looks like i need a new graphics card.....now just need the money...was planning on getting a new computer anyway!

if it was that caked in dust it prolly half-cooked itself, hence your problem. =)

yeah thats what i was thinking....but i cant see any physical problems with the vid card (melting or anything)...and before i even took the layer of dust off i was watching the temp of the card when i was trying to figure out wat was wrong and it didnt go over 67 degrees celcius (tops out at like 123 or something)...even when it began to fuck up.....so i dont think it overheated or anything....

Yeah its prolly more cooked internally, like in that caps and through some of the resistors (after being 'burnt' i think their resistance is higher than it should be) or whatever. Its been many years since i've done any electronics, many many years.

hey acid, i got a MSI 7600GT and exactly the same thing happened to me, went back to pc shop today and i described the symptoms, they said it was faulty and gave me another one because it was under warranty.
oh and i could also take screenshots and the line thingies showed up as well.
