u can get service packs and upgrades via other methods...trust me...you do not need to pay $400 for a workable xp edition.....i have installed the same xp several times on this pc...and on about 4 other pcs...for the cost of nothing...all using the same key....and each computer has SP2 and all the windows updates available..... Or you could just go to RMIT and get it for free

Well I haven't factored XP into my current upgrade... so hopefully you're right and I can figure out a way.
Here's my PC... although it's almost the same as Brentons... actually it's exactly the same except for these:
Case: Antec Sonata II (Super Quiet, and not bad looking) CPU: AMD x2 4400+
Apart from that, Brenton's PC exactly.

why are you getting a 4400+? just to be better than brenton? its not really worth the extra cost in my opinion. the 4200+ will run on par to a 3500+ in single core applications which is pretty decent.. (i have a 3500+ haha) For the extra $150 or so you wont see much performance difference. I'd ditch that idea and get a better video card. Are you going with a 7900gt or a 7600gt like you said earlier?
the thing that annoys me about antec is that they never supply all the fans for the case

I'd say only go for the 4200+ as well, but you'd probably just think that was me not wanting you to have a better comp than me and yeah, he is gonna get the 7900gt as well.

Antec don't supply any fans? That's pretty poor... but standard fans are like $8 so it doesn't bother me that much. Although I wish it had a bigger PSU...
Chip (although I try to avoid his advice at all times - ie. "As if they'd make PCI express. We have AGP now and there's no way they'd go back to PCI. PCI is OLD" etc etc *argues for hours against Alan and I despite the fact we know what we're talking about*) says Thermaltake is good... but he also thinks SuperLanBoy loooks cool... so we can't trust him in terms of choosing cases.
And yes, I'm getting a 7900gt. There's little point not spending the $150 extra on the slight CPU boost because where else am I gonna spend it? $150 extra isn't going to do anything to my video card, as the next one up is 7900gtx which is like $300 more.
I guess I could probably get 2gb of ram instead... but why not get the 4400+ if I have the money? It just means the next upgrade won't be needed for a little bit longer basically.

lol you fool!
You dont HAVE to spend all of your money??! And by the time the 4200+ is out of date so will the 4400+ theres basically no difference!
Thats like how my dad has a P4 2.6Ghz and I have a P4 2.4Ghz, there both out of date and his isnt worth any more than mine. If you want to waste extra money why dont you just buy a Dell computer?

i have a superlanboy....fairly sweet.... There goes the last lingering thread of my respect for you. That has to be the worst-looking case ever. And yes, Instead of spending that money, save it for something else shay. Put it towards a PS3 (Though thats a long way off), or buy 75 bottles of Red Eye (What a waste ). Or something else, but i really dont think the 4400+ is worth it. You say you wont spend $300 to get a slightly better video card, so why spend $150 to get s slightly better cpu?

yer if i was you id just get an extra gig of ram.. that will be more worthwhile than the 4400+ games are getting to the point now where 1 gig isnt enough

Yeah, i think i may regret having got 2 512 stick of ram... should have got a 1 gig stick and then i could upgrade better later... or can you put 4 sticks all in 2 sets of dual channel?

dw about it. You wont need more than 1 gb for like another year.
Unless you play ur games on Ultra High settings at like 1900x1600 resolutions.

I'm going with what Alan says. I'll upgrade RAM when I need to. It's not actually going to affect my PC in any way having 2GB of RAM over 1 GB.
The 4400+ isn't because I think it's a major boost you fools. It's because it's one more number across, and that's one less processor from being extinct and needing another upgrade. It won't be a huge difference, but in my mind I'll know it's like the second best processor I can get.
Anyway, while your urge to stop me wasting my money has been appreciated, I've handed a list over to CentreCom (who said they'd match or beat everything on the list, as it was a list of components at MSY prices) and he's gonna ring me at some point when he can get it in.
And I may be spending an extra $150 on a slightly faster PC... but didn't Brenton spend that JUST ON HIS KEYBOARD? And surely Alan pays that much per month just on buying more mouses. And at least I'm not getting a $900 graphics card.
Anyway, this topic has pretty much been closed now. Stop worrying about my money and start crying that my PC will soon pwn yours.

haha.. bf2 and oblivion are both meant to run better on 2gb of ram. your system memory has nothing to do with your resolution size..
and yes brenton you can have 4 * 512 sticks in dual channel mode.. each set will be on its own channel

I dont care that your computer will beat mine, hell, I've never had the best computer so i really dont care. Im trying to save a jobless bum some money. And I spent $140 on a keyboard, but i'd value this keyboard much better than the slight increase you'd get from that processor.
Well, ovbviously i cant get you to see reason. seriously, that reason you put has to be the WORST reason to get a better cpu. the slightly better performnance was a better reason. You are clearly drunk with the money you have, and if you have the burning desire to waste it, we cant stop you. Just think about it. I dont care if your comp will be slightly better. It'll run everything exactly the same, jsut yours might load things a half second quicker. I can live with that. They'll both become obselete at teh same time, so theres no real reason.
Lol, though I can just wait till like in a months time you need money, and i'll say "Well, you COULD have an extra $150 right now..."
Oh, and thanks josh, thats good to know.

That entire post seemed to be about you saying how not jealous you are... Brenton I'm not getting a 4400+ to beat you. That'd be ridiculous. You could buy more RAM next week and I'd probably be losing or equal then. Our computers are going to be almost exactly the same, and combined out computers will pwn everyone elses.
As I said, it's for my state of mind (although it's the state of mind attributed to the fact that I know I have a slight increase in performance... it's not like I dont care about that at all, which would be stupid).
However your constant taunts are getting annoying, but be aware that I've basically put an order in on all the parts. I gave them a list and my number.
By the way... I'm not actually spending all my money. I still end up with about $300 left over... so I'm not actually drunk with money and spending it all. If I need money in a months time I'll use that.

Noooo! I'd just pretty much changed my mind over into getting 2Gb of RAM instead of a 4400+, and then u start to agree with me?! I'd forgotten about the whole... CPUs being harder to replace (although not by a lot) and now you bring that up again...

Wait, something occurs... when I need to upgrade the CPU in a couple of years or whatever... it'll almost certainly be to a CPU that goes into a different socket... hence I'll need a different motherboard... hence that's an irrelevant point. Whereas the RAM I may need to upgrade before then.. it's more likely anyway.

Then there is no need for 2Gb of ram at this point in time, there only using their computers for games.
Maybe like at the end of the year they might need 2gb of ram to play Doom 4 on full graphics.

CentreCom is the best!! Here's the scenario:
Brenton got most of his parts before I did, doing the wise thing and going to MSY despite the fact that he lives really close to Centrecom, because obviously MSY is cheaper. He got almost all the parts at MSY, but he had to get the video card (7900gt) at Centrecom because MSY didn't have any. The problem was, neither did CentreCom, so they ordered one in, telling him it'd be in the next day. The very next day... he didn't got a call. I went in there however to see if they'd got some more in so I could get one without having to look around. They hadn't... but I gave them a list of prices from MSY and asked if they could match them. They said "Yes... in fact probably beat them," and they did... only be $10... but they said it might even be cheaper when it comes in. They said the only problem was the video card... and he looked the site up (BFGTech) and found that they had released new overclocked versions of the 7900gt (7900gtOC) which must be why it was hard to get the normal ones.
Anyway, I went in today to change my order from (4400+ with 1GB of RAM to 4200+ with 2GB of RAM) and he goes "Good news! Your video has come in! And even better news which you're gonna like..." and he went to get it... and brought back the Overclocked version, which is worth $150 more. Me: "Er..." Him:"It's overclocked! It's the better version!" Me: "But doesn't this cost more?" Him: "150 more!" Me: *stunned look, thinking 'what is this guy doing...'* Him: "But you get it for the same price!"
Apparently he had been on the phone to some BFGTech guy for 30 minutes trying to get the card, until he finally convinced him to give him the OC version for the same price. And now, I'm reaping the benefits!
Brenton finally got called that night to go get his NORMAL 7900gt (I dont know how they got his - unless they're surprising him with a better one too) but either way... Centrecom has a customer for life in me. Best. Ever.
